The 2023 Kia Sportage will be a fully redesigned model as the nameplate enters its fifth generation. Along with a major structural refresh and advanced interior cockpit enhancements, it will be offered as a hybrid SUV with more than 500 miles of driving range.
Under the hood, the Sportage Hybrid will combine a turbocharged 1.6-liter GDI engine with a 44-kW electric motor and high-output 1.49 kWh battery to generate 226 horsepower. Kia is targeting an average fuel economy of 39 mpg (though it has yet to be officially rated by the EPA) and says the Sportage will emit 40 percent fewer CO2 emissions than the outgoing model did. Even in light of that promising efficiency, the hybrid SUV will still be able to tow up to 2,000 pounds.
This is big news for families in Evansville, Indiana, looking to reduce their environmental footprint or simply hoping to save a buck on gas fill-ups. With class-leading passenger and cargo space, excellent road manners, and loads of high-tech interior features like dual 12.3-inch displays, the Sportage Hybrid doesn’t represent compromise — it represents the best that an SUV can be.
